Several days ago in discussing the importance of quality content with a client, I was reminded of the SEO Pyramid, developed by SEOMOZ. The Pyramid illustrates the point perfectly.
My greatest challenge in helping small business owners with SEO is developing accessible, quality content. The problem is that those small business owners are the experts in their businesses and they’re the folks who are most able to supply quality information about their products and services. Yet oftentimes, they don’t like to write or are not good at it. So their websites contains very little information or perhaps just some marketing information furnished by their web developers. A good friend of mine is a web developer and she’s often forced to provide the text for a website just because her clients can’t seem to do the writing involved. She’s the first to admit that she’s not expert in the product and service areas her clients work in, but to launch their websites, she’s forced into authorship!
This kind of non-expert website content will not attract attention in social media, and it won’t work well to build good search engine rankings. This situation repeats itself with so many well-intentioned small business owners, who say they’ll do the writing required, but seem unable to provide it when required.
I’ve been dealing with the issue for several years and the best solution I’ve come up with is to record interviews with clients. I’ll often research some common “keyword phrase” questions relevant to a client’s business and then I’ll arrange a time to either video or do audio recordings of the client’s responses to the questions. Those responses can be turned into blog posts at the rate of about six to eight blog posts per recording session. To further the process of building out content for the website, we’ll record a discussion of the topics presented on each of the web pages.
I can send the recordings to a transcriptionist who furnishes me with the text copy I can use for website pages and for blog posts. The system works very well and with some clients, it has given me the ability to update their websites on a daily basis. That fresh, keyword-rich content is exactly what the search engines like Google and Bing are looking for and they reward those sites with search traffic.
So if you’re facing writer’s block in creating the content for your website, try recording an interview and then transcribing it. We guarantee that you’ll create better content, faster than ever before.
