I often have a hard time persuading my search engine optimization (SEO) clients that they need to work at gathering online customer reviews even though these work as SEO customer reviews.  Most business owners don’t see the connection between working for a top Google search results ranking and collecting online recommendations from their customers.  Typically, they’re nervous about collecting online recommendations — perhaps a little afraid of what the occasional sour customer would say.  Sometimes they just don’t see the value in putting money and effort into a customer reviews collection process.

It’s obvious that all of the top results have lots of reviews.  The top Google Places listing has 60 customer reviews, the next has 75,  the third has 84, and the last one in the screenshot has 7 reviews.  There are no top listings with no customer reviews — good evidence that Google factors in customer reviews in deciding where to rank various Google Places business listings.

If you have a significant amount of competition in your local market, sooner or later one of your competitors will figure out that online customer reviews can help boost Google search rankings.  Auto body shops are not though of as being focused on customer feedback, but in the Houston market, the top ranking auto body shops have learned that they have to be.

Why wait for your competitors to get a head start in collecting online customer reviews?  It’s not a quick process and it’s hard to close a lead if your competitors can build one in totals of good reviews.  You’ll do much better at collecting customer reviews if you use customer feedback to find the most loyal fans of your business, and then ask those fans to provide you with online reviews.
