A Recent Study Says That Organic Social Media Marketing is Most Popular But Not Most Successful
A recent article in MarketingLand.com‘s blog said that, “more than one in three large social media advertisers are not satisfied with their efforts from both paid and organic social media strategies.” The article went on to say that those marketers that are satisfied with their social media marketing efforts are happier with the results achieved from paid social media advertising then from using organic tactics alone.
The article is titled “Organic Posting Is Most Popular Social Media Tactic, But Not The Most Successful” and was written by Ginny Marvin. The study behind the article was done by Forrester Consulting to look at the tactics and strategies used by marketers whose companies spend more than $100,000 a year on social media marketing.
Speaking from experience, it can be difficult to decide how much time and effort to devote to organic social media marketing tactics and paid social media marketing tactics like promoting posts on Facebook and purchasing Facebook ads. A recent article in Fortune magazine highlighted the fact that Facebook marketing, and especially paid Facebook marketing can be expensive. You devote time and other resources to creating informative Facebook postings, and then you find that you have to pay more to promote your posts to more than a tiny fraction of your fan base. And even then, your promoted post might only reach 50% of your fans. You might augment that with Facebook paid advertising, but you’re always wondering whether those resources are paying off with visits to your website by qualified customers and phone calls to your store by people ready to buy.
Although paying to promote content was deemed the most successful tactic by the participants in the survey, only 8% of the survey respondents actually use that tactic. And fewer than 8% of the survey respondents use tactics like creating branded applications like social networks and created branded tabs. Only 3% purchased ads on social networks.
In our experience,, there is no one strategy for success in social media. Your optimal strategy depends on the kind of business you’re in, and the kinds of customers you have. A social media strategy based on Twittered specials and Foursquare check-in’s might work well for a coffee shop or a pizza restaurant. But that same strategy would not work at all for a cardiologist or divorce attorney. The social media marketing strategy that works best for your business will be unique to your business, and you’ll have to conduct some experimentation to determine what that best social media marketing strategy might be.
