You Can Commit Business Suicide Online with The Wrong SEO Services!
Yes, it’s true! You can kill your business by picking the wrong SEO services. If your SEO company promises you they can trick Google, it’s very unlikely that they’ll be able to meet their promise and it’s very likely that they’ll cause you to be penalized by Google for attempting those tricks. Although I use Google as the example, the comments also apply to Bing.
I have a new client, and after building a new website for this client I checked Google Webmaster Tools to see how Google viewed the website. I noticed there were hundreds of links from each of a few local business directories to my client’s website. Normally I’d expect to see one or two or three links from each of these local business directories. But there were up to 400 links from any one directory.
I checked with my client, and he confirmed that an earlier SEO services company had promised to boost his Google rankings by creating hundreds of false listings for these local business directories. These false listings would include his website address with a false physical address, and so there would be hundreds of new links pointing to his website address from each local business directory. This was going to boost his search engine rankings.
Google is smarter than that! Google sees that where there should be a couple of links there are hundreds, all with different addresses, and instead of providing a rankings boost, that behavior will put your company in a rankings hole. It’s SEO Suicide!
So even though my client has a great new website, Google continues to penalize my client for the unusual, suspicious pattern of links from these local business directories. There are several fixes for this problem, and none of them are cheap. My client’s business has been penalized by poor search engine rankings, and will be penalized again by the cost of cleaning up this mess.
There’s a simple two-part test to check if an SEO services company will cause your business great harm.
1. Does the SEO company promise you great results by being more clever than Google? In other words, does the SEO company tell you that they’ve figured out some way to get you great rankings by tricking Google? If the answer is yes, you should be ready to show these guys the door.
2. Does the SEO company representative look smarter than Google? Google hires some of the smartest people in the world to develop their ranking algorithms. These same people also work hard at identifying companies that try to game the system through paid link schemes and other tricks. If the guys in your office have backgrounds so impressive that they could work for Google, then maybe they’re onto something. But if not, it’s time to get out of your chair open the door and usher your visitors through the door. Or show them the “virtual door” by hanging up the phone.
This is the SEO version of the rule we’re all familiar with, “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.” To put it another way, if an SEO services company tells you it can trick Google, it will likely kill your company online if it’s not as smart as Google. Very, very few of them are!
Be smart! Choose an SEO services company that adheres to ethical, white hat standards. You won’t be penalized by Google, and you won’t be penalized by the cost of recovering from Google’s penalty.
