Google Needs Words to Evaluate and Rank Your Website
I’ve talked to several clients and potential clients over the last few weeks and in discussing web design, several business owners have told me that particular websites have too many words. They’ll say, “nobody will read all that.”
To that comment I always respond, “Google will read all that”!
Google and the other search engines rely on quality content to understand what your website is all about and to understand the relevance of your website to the search phrases that Web visitors use. With little text content on your website, you’ll be making it difficult for Google to place your website in rankings and you’ll likely be rewarded with a poor rank in search results. So yes, you should keep your customers in mind when designing your website, but you should also keep in mind the need to educate Google and the other search engines in what your website and your business are all about.
A friend of mine used to have a beautiful shop dedicated to imports from Ireland. There were crystal vases, Irish wool sweaters, and various other Irish handicrafts displayed throughout the store. His website reflected the same design ideas with lots of pictures of his Irish wares, but very little text describing his offerings. As a result, the website did very poorly in search results — even in a small city. There was very little on the site that Google could use to determine that beautiful Irish handicrafts were offered by this store.
So in working with your web developer and planning your website, keep in mind what you need to say to inform your customers and also keep in mind what you need to say on your website to tell Google what you’re all about. If you do this, your website will move up in search engine rankings.
In all of this, you should also remember to use the words and phrases that your customers will use in looking for your products and services. Don’t use “marketing speak” that talks about your “world-class, flexible, scalable solutions.” If your customers can’t tell what you sell by looking at your home page, Google can’t either!
